ITSNT : the main Navigation & Timing symposium in E.U

Publié le 27 October 2016

The 15th and 16th of november, 2016, the International Symposium on Navigation and Timing (ITSNT) 2016 will take place at ENAC Toulouse. Intervew with Olivier Julien ENAC researcher and ITSNT Chairman.

What is the ITSNT?

The ITSNT is an annual event that takes place at ENAC whose aim is to present the latest technical developments in the field of navigation and timing. Internationally recognized guest speakers are invited to present their recent work and participate in round tables. This allows the audience to participate and interact with these experts. Thanks to our public and private sponsors, and in order to provide access to a wide range of participants, the ITSNT is free of charge.

What are the main topics that will be discussed?

The ITSNT main topics of interest are the technologies and applications related to navigation and timing in general. However, each year has its specificities. This year, for instance, will include presentations on topics related to navigation systems for robots, drones and airplanes, to state-of-the-art techniques used to improve GNSS positioning as well as to the use of cameras for the navigation of automated machines such as autonomous vehicles.

What is new in the ITSNT2016 edition?

Since its first edition in 2014, the ITSNT has evolved. This year, half-day tutorials on the main technical topics of the symposium have been added. Some of these will be taught by the invited experts. This provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn directly from these true specialists. There will also be a session dedicated specifically to presentations from European PhD students in order to promote young researchers in the field.

What is the target audience of the ITSNT?

The ITSNT is a technical event. It is therefore recommended to be familiar with the functioning of at least some of the systems that will be discussed during the presentations. However, the invited speakers are usually exemplary presenters than can communicate their messages to a large audience. In addition, the ITSNT offers an occasion to discuss directly with the experts during the round tables.

What future trends do you predict for the ITSNT 2017 edition?

Thanks to the success of the previous editions, the ITSNT will evolve significantly in 2017. Foremost, CNES (the French government space agency) will be a co-organizer which will be a major support. Moreover, up until now the ITSNT was open to invited speakers only, but for the ITSNT2017 some sessions will be opened to presenters selected based on a call for papers, offering them an opportunity to communicate their research. An international scientific committee comprising high profile experts will support the program and selection process.
